What are Occupational vaccinations?

Some occupations, particularly those associated with healthcare, have an increased risk of exposure to diseases that can be prevented by vaccination. Under the Health and Safety at Work Act (HSWA) 1974, employers have a duty to offer pre-exposure immunisations to these employees. Broadly, vaccinations may be required for workers who:

  • Handle human pathogens, blood, serum or tissue specimens
  • Are in contact with human or animal waste
  • Work in mortuaries or handle human remains
  • Are involved in fieldwork overseas
  • Are required to travel overseas

Common occupational vaccinations include BCG, Hepatitis A and B, Influenza, MMR, Meningitis, Tetanus, Diphtheria, Polio, and Varicella (Chicken Pox).

Additionally, staff who work with vulnerable patients, particularly those who are immuno-compromised may be at risk of transmitting vaccine preventable infectious diseases to their patients. Employers may want to consider vaccinating workers against common diseases like Seasonal Influenza, Measles, Mumps, Pertussis, Rubella, Tuberculosis and Varicella to protect their patients from infection.

Although workers will commonly have received vaccinations against many of these diseases as part of the NHS childhood immunisation programme, it may be necessary to have booster jabs to ensure maximum immunity is maintained.

Why choose JDR Healthcare to administer occupational vaccines?

JDR Healthcare are vaccination specialists and as such are well placed to advise you on the vaccinations that you should offer to your workforce. Additionally, we believe that taking a holistic approach to infection control is the most effective way to protect your staff, so as well as vaccinating we offer advice on best practise to reduce the risk of exposure to and transmission of disease causing pathogens in the workplace.

As well as advising on and offering vaccination programmes for healthcare, clinical laboratory and pathology staff, JDR Healthcare can also advise on vaccinations that may be required by non-clinical healthcare workers and workers in other industries, such as oil and gas.

Our vaccination clinics are run by fully qualified and registered nurses who specialise in vaccination and have a wealth of experience in both advising on and administering vaccinations.

What will JDR Healthcare do?

JDR Healthcare will come to your workplace, or a location of your choosing, to administer vaccinations to your staff. You do not need to provide anything other than a private room where we can consult with each employee and administer the vaccinations.

Having established broadly what immunisations are required, our experienced, registered vaccination nurse will assess each employee individually in terms of their medical history, current medications and immunisation history.

If employees have pre-existing medical conditions or are currently taking medication, we will ensure that all vaccinations are compatible and safe before they are administered. Where necessary, our nurse will consult with our medical director, a qualified GP, who provides medical advice and support to our clinics.

Please note that all information gathered by JDR Healthcare during pre-vaccination assessments is treated in the strictest confidence.

When the clinic is complete, JDR Healthcare will remove all clinical and paper waste from the site.
